The Superior VRE4536 is a 36 inch outdoor universal vent-free firebox with a 36" wide by 30" tall opening. It is the insulated shell for an outdoor fireplace and is used with a certified vent-free gas log set of up to 40,000 BTU/h, sold separately. It suits a covered patio or outdoor room where a manufactured firebox is wanted instead of a site-built masonry one, with a white stacked or white herringbone refractory panel.
Vent-free gas appliances cannot be installed in New York City under the NYC Fuel Gas Code. We sell this model for installations outside the five boroughs where local code allows it.

What Is Included and What You Will Need
- Included: the firebox, refractory panels in the finish you select, 36 inch stainless deflector hood and mesh screens
- Required: a certified vent-free gas log set, ANSI Z21.97, maximum 40,000 BTU/h, sold separately
- Required: an outdoor enclosure that meets the manual: walls on all sides with no overhead cover, a partial enclosure with a cover and no more than two side walls, or a cover with three side walls and at least 30 percent of the periphery permanently open
- Required: a gas supply line sized for your log set and a licensed installer
- Optional: Superior 4 inch Air Kit with Collar, Hood and 3 foot Flex (AK4)
Installation Notes
The firebox is for outdoor use only and must be installed in a framed enclosure to the dimensions above with 1-1/2 inch clearance at the sides and back. Where it sits on carpeting, vinyl tile or other combustible material other than wood flooring, it must be on a metal or wood panel the width and depth of the enclosure. Do not build a wood fire in it. The supplied hood must be used at all times with a vent-free log heater. A licensed gas installer should connect the log set, and local code applies. Book a design consultation to review your outdoor space.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the firebox include the gas logs and burner?
No. It is a firebox only. Superior requires a certified vent-free log heater, ANSI Z21.97, up to 40,000 BTU/h, which is sold separately.
Can I use it under a covered patio?
Yes, if the enclosure meets the outdoor enclosure rules in the manual, including at least 30 percent permanent opening when there is a cover and three side walls.
Can I burn wood in it?
No. The manual states do not build a wood fire in this firebox.
Can it be installed in New York City?
No. Vent-free gas appliances cannot be installed in New York City under the NYC Fuel Gas Code. We sell this model for installations outside the five boroughs where local code allows it.

Innovative Hearth Products 20 Year Limited Warranty on the body, firebox and barrier, with ceramic glass covered against thermal breakage only. The burner, gas components and gaskets carry one year of coverage, and vent components, trim and paint are excluded. Installation in the United States or Canada per the printed instructions is required.
