The Modern Flames Challenger 50 (CEF-50B) is a 50 in. linear electric fireplace that hangs on the wall, recesses partway or sets fully flush into a framed opening only 5-1/2 in. deep. Ten flame and ember bed colors, five brightness levels and a 1,500 W heater run from the front touch panel or the included remote, and glacier crystals come as the standard media. It plugs into a dedicated 15 A outlet or can be hardwired, with no gas line or venting.

Installation Notes

For a recessed install, frame a 47-1/4 in. W x 20-3/4 in. H x 5-1/2 in. D opening in a non-load-bearing wall (the spec sheet lists 20-1/2 in. H; build to the owner's manual and confirm on site), and keep 11-13/16 in. from the glass to any mantel or ceiling. For wall mounting, screw the bracket into studs where possible. Keep the unit at least 36 in. from drapes and furniture. Electric fireplaces need no gas line or venting, which makes them one of the simplest fireplace options for New York City apartments and co-ops, subject to building and board approval for any electrical work.

Does it need a dedicated circuit?

Yes. Modern Flames calls for a dedicated 15 A (or higher) circuit, and never an extension cord.

Can it go under a TV?

Keep at least 11-13/16 in. from the glass to anything above, and check the TV maker's heat guidance.

Warranty

Modern Flames limited warranty (2022-2023 policy), which covers all Modern Flames brand products bought from authorized dealers: 5 years from the date of purchase when the owner registers the product at modernflames.com, otherwise the standard 2 years; integrated screens 1 year. The warranty is not transferable, consumable and normal wear parts are excluded, and Modern Flames must be contacted first to troubleshoot before service.
