The Osburn 3500 is an EPA certified wood-burning insert for an existing masonry fireplace, with one of the larger glass doors in its class and a 3.5 cubic foot firebox that takes logs up to 22 inches. It is rated for 1,000 to 2,700 square feet and ships with a blower, so it suits a home that wants real wood heat from a fireplace opening that currently wastes it.

What Is Included and What You Will Need

  • Included per the installation manual: blower, ash lip, air control handle, combustion chamber side bricks, and the faceplate, trims and door overlay you select.
  • Required: a continuous 6 inch stainless steel liner from the insert to the top of the chimney (the listing offers 25 ft and 35 ft kits as an option, or have your installer supply one), with at least 12 inches of rigid liner above the masonry to the rain cap.
  • Required: a sound masonry chimney that extends at least 3 ft above the roof contact point and 2 ft above anything within 10 ft.
  • Optional: fresh air intake kit AC01298, rigid fire screen (required for door-open operation) and liner fastening system.

Installation Notes

The manual requires installation by a qualified technician, a liner that meets UL 1777 or the Canadian equivalents, and non-combustible floor protection in front of the unit. Wood burning in New York City is regulated: Local Law 38 of 2015 limits new solid fuel fireplaces and the Air Pollution Control Code governs what can be burned, so confirm the rules for your address before you order. Does it need a liner?

Yes. The manual calls for a continuous 6 inch liner from the insert to the top of the chimney, with at least 12 inches of rigid liner above the masonry chimney to the rain cap.

Does it work without electricity?

The blower is the only electrical component, so the insert burns without power. The blower adds up to about 2% efficiency per the manual.

Can I burn wood in NYC?

Osburn's Limited Lifetime Warranty covers firebox welds, the cast iron door frame, ceramic glass and plating for life, surrounds, baffle and secondary air tubes for 7 years (parts only), the blower, electronics and wiring for 2 years parts and 1 year labor, and gaskets, insulation, paint and refractory bricks for 1 year.
