The Mahana 42 (PL42VO) is a vent-free outdoor gas fireplace: a 304 stainless steel firebox with a glass door and safety screen, a concealed burner under quartz firebeads, and a built-in fan system that pushes warmth up to about 10 ft onto the patio. It builds into an outdoor wall with full combustible framing and facing, so a TV can mount directly above, or it becomes a freestanding fire feature with Montigo's stainless or powder-coated enclosure, selected in the options above.

What Is Included and What You Will Need

  • Included: PL42VO fireplace with burner, quartz firebeads, built-in fans, glass door, safety screen and waterproof control box with 3 ft power cord
  • Choose above: built-in installation (no enclosure) or a freestanding enclosure in brushed stainless or one of seven powder-coat colors
  • Required: a gas line from a certified gas fitter to the left side of the fireplace, with an accessible service shutoff valve
  • Required: a GFCI-protected 120VAC, 60 Hz, 5 A circuit for the control box
  • Required for wall installs: framing to 42 in. x 27-1/4 in. x 11-5/8 in., exterior flashing and drainage so water cannot collect in the enclosure

Installation Notes

This is an outdoor vent-free appliance listed to ANSI Z21.97 for outdoor decorative gas appliances; it must never be installed inside a building, garage or any other enclosed area. Allowed locations per the manual include open patios and decks, partial enclosures with an overhead cover and no more than two side walls, covered porches with at least one full side and one half side open, and screened porches with two full sides of more than 75 percent open screen. Keep 36 in. from the opening to the ceiling and 36 in. in front to combustibles, choose a spot sheltered from strong wind, and flash and drain wall installations. For New York City addresses, outdoor gas fireplaces and their piping fall under the NYC Fuel Gas Code and Department of Buildings permitting, so the approval path for this vent-free unit must be confirmed before you buy; we review that, along with Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey sites, during a fireplace design consultation.

Can the Mahana be installed in New York City?

It is certified for outdoor use only, and any NYC installation of an outdoor gas fireplace must clear the NYC Fuel Gas Code and Department of Buildings process. Confirm the approval path for your property with us and a licensed master plumber before ordering.

Do I need the enclosure?

No. The fireplace is complete for a built-in wall installation. The enclosure turns it into a freestanding fire feature; choose "None (built-in installation)" if you are framing it into a wall.

Can I put a TV above it?

Montigo lists the Mahana for wood frame construction and combustible facing and markets it for mounting a TV directly above the fireplace. Keep the 36 in. clearance from the opening to any ceiling.

Does it need electricity?

Yes. The control box needs a GFCI-protected 120VAC, 60 Hz, 5 A circuit for the ignition and built-in fans.

Warranty

Montigo Residential Warranty Program, which lists the Mahana: firebox, heat exchanger and main burner are covered for 15 years with 1 year of labor. Gas valve and control components, electrical components (blowers, ignition module, wiring, switches, remote systems, accent bulbs), firebox media, glass (thermal breakage), finishes, refractory and safety barriers are covered for 1 year, parts and labor. Coverage applies to installations in the United States and Canada and requires installation by a licensed professional with annual service by an authorized Montigo dealer. Montigo is not responsible for blowouts from strong winds or inadequate ventilation, and UV discoloration and lack of maintenance are excluded. Montigo's terms also require the fireplace to be purchased and installed through an authorized Montigo dealer.
