The Hargrove Kodiak 18 in double stack vented gas log set builds a big, stacked fire in a mid-size wood-burning fireplace: Hargrove's large ember bed burner plus an elevated main burner carry two tiers of 21 in Kodiak Char, Kodiak Split or Kodiak Timbers logs. This 18SNDS0A8 version is match light, with no standing pilot: you light it with a long match or lighter as you turn the gas on.

What Is Included and What You Will Need

  • You will need: a working, code-compliant wood-burning fireplace at least 22 in wide at the front, 18 in at the back and 15 in deep, a natural gas supply sized for about 70,000 BTU/h, a fire screen, and a qualified gas installer

Installation Notes

Hargrove vented gas logs burn like wood with a yellow, smoky flame, so they may only be used in a fully vented, non-combustible wood-burning fireplace with the damper open and the chimney clear. Install the supplied damper stop (or a permanent one) so the damper can never close fully, keep glass doors fully open while the set operates, and use a fire screen. Installation must be done by a qualified gas installer. With a match light set, open the damper fully, hold a lit long match or lighter next to the burner and turn the gas on slowly until it ignites, as the Kodiak manual describes; never close the damper until all flames are out.

In New York City, a vented gas log set goes into a working, code-compliant wood-burning fireplace and chimney, and the gas connection must be made by a licensed master plumber under permit. Have the chimney inspected first; Hargrove requires the damper to stay fixed open whenever the set is installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does match light mean?

There is no standing pilot. You hold a lit long match or lighter at the burner and turn the gas on slowly until it lights, then turn the gas off to put it out.

Can it run on propane?

No. This match light version is natural gas only; Hargrove requires an automatic pilot system for propane.

How big a fireplace do I need?

At least 22 in wide at the front, 18 in at the back and 15 in deep for the double stack.

Can I add a third tier of logs?

Hargrove offers a triple stack add-on burner that needs a 25 in deep fireplace; check the Kodiak documents for sizes.

Warranty

Hargrove gives a limited lifetime warranty on the logs against manufacturing defects or breakage, five (5) years on the burner and grate, and two (2) years on valves, remote controls, switching devices and all other parts, from the verified purchase date.
