The Superior VRE4242 is a 42 in. traditional vent-free firebox with refractory panels molded from hand-cut firebrick, built for outdoor rooms, covered patios and outdoor kitchens. The front face and every weather-exposed surface are 304 stainless steel.
It needs no chimney or flue. Add a listed outdoor vent-free log set and burner, such as Superior's Giant Timbers set, choose White Stacked or White Herringbone refractory, and finish it with stone, tile or stucco.

What Is Included and What You Will Need
- Included: firebox with top and bottom frames, corner posts, stand-off brackets, fire screens, screen rods, two flex connectors and the refractory panel set you select, per the manual parts list
- Required: a listed vent-free log set and burner, such as the Superior Giant Timbers outdoor log set with Mega-Flame burner (30 in. logs with the 24 in. burner)
- Optional: 42 in. brushed stainless outdoor hood (Hood42ODSL) and drain pan (DPSS42)
- Required: framing, exterior-rated finish materials and a gas line
Installation Notes
Frame with 2 x 4 lumber or heavier to at least 48-3/4 in. wide and 46-1/2 in. high, adding 3/4 in. of height if you use the drain pan, and treat the enclosure's sides and back as an exterior wall with a way for water to drain. Keep 42 in. from the top of the opening to the ceiling, never install it in windy or drafty areas, and use only a listed log set no larger than 40,000 BTU/h. Vent-free gas appliances cannot be installed in New York City under the NYC Fuel Gas Code. We sell this model for installations outside the five boroughs where local code allows it. Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with logs?
No. The VRE4242 is the firebox only. Add a listed vent-free log set and burner, such as Superior Giant Timbers 30 in. logs with the 24 in. outdoor burner.
Can it be used indoors?
Superior tested it for indoor use with ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free logs, but vent-free gas appliances cannot be installed in New York City, and local code decides elsewhere.
What is the largest burner it accepts?
A listed unvented gas heater of no more than 40,000 BTU/h.
Is a drain pan needed outdoors?
The manual requires a way to collect and drain water; the DPSS42 drain pan is the factory option.

Warranty
Superior (Innovative Hearth Products) 20 year limited warranty, per the VRE4200 manual and smart sheet: the product body, firebox and barrier are covered for 20 years; the burner, gas components, gaskets and logs (thermal breakage) for 1 year; optional glass doors and unlisted parts for 90 days. IHP pays prevailing labor rates on covered repairs for up to five years. Coverage applies in the United States and Canada to the original owner only.
