The Superior VRT6000 42 in. vent-free universal firebox (VRT6042) is a factory-built, masonry-look firebox made to hold a listed vent-free gas log set, so you get a traditional brick fireplace without a chimney or vent. It comes with firebrick walls, a hood and a wire-mesh screen, and it frames into a standard wall with tight clearances.
The firebox has no burner of its own: it is designed for an ANSI Z21.11.2 decorative unvented room heater (a vent-free log set) rated no higher than 40,000 Btu/h, chosen to fit the 42 in. opening.

What Is Included and What You Will Need

- Required: a gas line installed by a qualified installer, and enough room volume or ventilation air for the log set's Btu rating
- Needed for grouting: piping bag, joint striker, heavy-duty mixing bucket and a sponge or wet cloth
- Optional: Superior AK4 or AK4F outside air kit
Installation Notes
Superior requires the room to be large enough for the log set: the manual's method allows 20 Btu/h per cubic foot of space, and smaller rooms need ventilation air from an adjoining space or outdoors. The firebox cannot go in a bedroom unless the log set is rated under 10,000 Btu/h. Keep 1-1/2 in. at the sides and back, at least 42 in. from the top of the opening to the ceiling, and follow the mantel chart; on carpet or vinyl, set the firebox on a full-size metal or wood panel. The hood and screen must stay in place, and wood must never be burned. Vent-free gas appliances cannot be installed in New York City under the NYC Fuel Gas Code. We sell this model for installations outside the five boroughs where local code allows it. Talk to us about the right log set and whether a vent-free system suits your home outside the city.

Only with a log set rated under 10,000 Btu/h, and Massachusetts prohibits vent-free products in bedrooms and bathrooms.

Warranty
Superior (Innovative Hearth Products) 20 Year Limited Warranty, per the installation manual: the firebox body is covered for 20 years, with IHP paying its prevailing labor rates on covered repairs for up to five years; other components carry shorter terms, such as 90 days for optional glass doors and unlisted parts. Coverage is for the original owner only, requires purchase from a listed IHP supplier, and requires installation by an IHP-approved licensed contractor in the United States or Canada. The vent-free log set carries its own manufacturer warranty.
